Alexander Vogel -- born Rainer Gernst -- is born to a prostitute mother and a lawyer father on December 24, 2182 in Berlin, Germany. His mother is a crude, selfish bitch. His father is unkind, demanding, and manipulative. Alex is not spared from their poor parenting skills, arguments, or abuse.
He spends the first ten years of his life in a rat-infested apartment.
“Why do you always have to do this?!”
“What the hell are you talking about?”
“You are so inconsiderate. You… you…”
“Don’t give a shit about you? Yeah, I’ve heard it before.”
“And you can hear it a hundred times over.”
One day, they find out his mother is infected.
Fearing what could happen if the police catch her, his father takes initiative, out of both fear of contracting the virus and losing her to a terrible demise, he puts a bullet through her forehead, and then goes upstairs to tuck his son into bed.
“Your mother has gone to a better place. She’s at peace now.”
“But.. but I heard a loud noise--”
“Why don’t you go to sleep, and we’ll talk about it in the morning.”
In the morning, the house smells of bleach.
Alex suffers through physical and mental abuse until he is thirteen, when his father admits him into military school.
He never sees his father again, until 2214, the year he turns thirty-two.
“It’s… it’s been so long! How has your life been?”
“Stimulating. And yours?”
“I’ll bet you’re-- ..Rainer?”
“It’s not Rainer.”
“What isn’t?”
“Then.. w-wait, R-Rainer, what are you doing?”
“This is the part where you shut up, father.”
“T-Think about what you’re doing, Rainer--”
“I have thought about it. I’m doing this so that I can take a few pleasant seconds to watch the fear grow in your eyes, and see you beg and plead like an infected piece of scum.”
Alex works his way through military school like a good boy, and shows exemplary achievement and progression after a time. When he’s old enough, he goes through the ranks, and when he is thirty-three, gains his current one and shows no interest in achieving a higher status. Why? He doesn’t know.
He has never had a single friend (didn’t want to make any, doesn’t want to have any), and wears a wedding ring, but no one claims to have ever seen his wife or heard of her. |
